DR Congo Annual Report 2019

Published 15. Sep 2020
In 2019, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) was able to assist 687,637 people affected by conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Between 2018 and 2019, the country continued to see humanitarian crises across the country leaving over 15 million people in need of assistance and protection. This crisis received little attention from international media and donor communities even with the third highest number of internally displaced people after Syria and Iraq.

Only 56 per cent of the total amount of funding needed to respond to the 13 million people targeted for assistance was received. Despite this, NRC operations supported 687,637 people in 2019 – particularly in hard-to-reach areas and volatile security contexts.

Spread across the Kivus, Tanganyika, Ituri, Maniema provinces and the Kasais region, with five area offices, five sub-offices and a team of close to 400 colleagues, NRC’s response strives to provide support to victims of the rampant conflict: NRC targets displaced people, destitute host communities and returnees. We have provided 687,637 vulnerable people with cash assistance, agricultural support, shelter, education, and legal assistance.

Through consortia with four other INGOs, NRC in DR Congo has been leading on a rapid response mechanism to assist conflict-affected people. We also relentlessly advocate for adequate funding to support the emergency response in DR Congo.
