NORCAP architects presented innovative solutions for refugee reception facilities in Greece at a meeting this week with the Greek General Secretary for refugee reception, Odysseas Voudouris.

The last El Niño phenomenon brought droughts and floods that increased humanitarian needs around the world. NORCAP experts have worked in some of the hardest hit areas, putting preparedness in the priority seat, to increase national and regional ability to cope with future events.

The upcoming rainy season in Mocoa, Colombia, could increase the vulnerability of women and girls in the area, fears GenCap adviser, Devanna de la Puente. Heavy rains and mudslides resulted in over 300 deaths in Mocoa earlier this month. Women and children are in particular need of help and attention.

As seen with the covid-19 pandemic, gender-based violence is often exacerbated by crises. But in order to combat violence towards women and girls, we need to address the underlying causes that were already in place before emergency struck, writes Delphine Brun, senior GenCap adviser at OCHA Cameroon.

The country’s 2016 peace agreement promised an end to 50 years of civil war, but a change of government and the humanitarian crisis in neighbouring Venezuela threaten to undermine its provisions.
