What practitioners, donors and BRCiS Members learned from three community-designed pilots linking rural and urban Somalia.

On 4 November 2026, the BRCiS Consortium and the Embassy of Sweden hosted Two-Way Traffic, an online learning event on the TERRA Project (Towards Regenerative Resilience and Climate Adaptation for Displacement Affected Communities in Somalia). TERRA was Sweden's first partnership with BRCiS (July 2024 to June 2026), and BRCiS' first project designed specifically around the links between rural and urban Somalia.

More than 70 participants from over 30 organisations joined, including BRCiS Members, peer implementers, UN agencies, research partners, Somali civil society, and representatives of Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, ECHO and AFD. The opening plenary heard from H.E. Hans Henric Lundquist, Ambassador of Sweden to Somalia; Perrine Piton, BRCiS Chief of Party; and Cecilia Kleimert, Resilience Program Manager at the Embassy of Sweden. Participants then joined breakout rooms on three pilot activities that were designed by communities specifically to target this linkage: the rehabilitation of Isha Road in Baidoa (NRC), the camel milk value chain in Galkacyo (KAALO), and biogas in Bardhere (Concern Worldwide and Lifeline Gedo).

The event summary records what was said and who said it, the lessons BRCiS is taking forward, and the questions still open. Among them: rural–urban links tend to fall between mandates, money works best when it is organised along a whole value chain, and who maintains and pays for an investment has to be agreed before it is built.

Recordings of the plenary, the three breakout rooms and the collective debrief are available online. The breakout recordings are partial and miss parts of some presentations; for the full account of each pilot, see the interactive report.
