The armed conflict in Colombia causes constant forced displacement of Colombians into Ecuador – the country receiving the highest number of Colombian refugees.

By September 2013 170,965 Colombians had registered for asylum in Ecuador, with an average of 1000 new claims each month. The vast majority of claimants are denied refugee status by the Ecuadorian authorities – the latest figures to be released in September 2013 show a 7.4 per cent recognition rate. There are 28,482 Colombian men and 26,138 Colombian women holding refugee status in Ecuador.
