The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is one of only a few agencies operating across all of Syria. The Syria conflict, now approaching its ninth year, has displaced more than half of the country's pre-war population. As of January 2020, more than 6.1 million Syrians are displaced within their own country.
We see how donations from people like you make a difference everyday. The families that NRC supports have witnessed years of intense fighting and have been affected by displacement in many ways. Your contributions give children, women and men the basics to help them cope now, and spark hope for the future.
Assistance on the ground
Your support helps us provide conflict-affected Syrians with learning opportunities, clean water and a roof over their heads. In the cold winter months, we distribute relief kits (above) that contain the necessities for everyday life, such as soap, hygiene items, blankets, mattresses, mats and plastic washing basins.
Hostilies have intensified in parts of northern Syria, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation. NRC and other humanitarian partners have had to re-prioritise and re-allocate existing funds and resources to address the most critical and immediate needs first.
We seek to maintain our access across Syria so that we can ensure people can continue to live in safety and dignity wherever they are in the country. In 2019, over 440,000 Syrians in need received assistance from NRC.
People still need our help. Your donation helps us to keep up with the immediate requirements of the thousands of men, women and children who are displaced each day.
Foundations for the future
We can continue to facilitate longer-term solutions to displacement in 2020 by repairing schools, training teachers and providing access to informal learning. In 2019, NRC restored 26 schools and conducted a number of professional training programmes designed to help young people work independently.
We advocate for the rights of vulnerable people and the role of humanitarian actors, and focus on supporting refugees and displaced Syrians to live in dignity at home and abroad. NRC calls for increased funding from governments to improve the lives of the Syrian people across the region.
I believe that children of today will make a better future tomorrow. They all have the right to a good education within child-friendly schools, in a safe environment and safe buildings.Wesam, NRC Shelter Team Leader
More than 90 per cent of NRC's global budget is used in the crisis-affected countries where we operate. We make sure that your donation goes to those who need it the most, where and when they need it.
