“The Norwegian Refugee Council condemns in the strongest terms the Russian Federation’s strikes last night on energy infrastructure in and around Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kryvyi Rih, in eastern Ukraine.
“We are deeply concerned about the affected individuals and families who have been left without power, heating, or water as temperatures plummet and we enter the coldest period of the year.
“These continued and massive attacks on civilian facilities essential for survival are unacceptable and contravene international humanitarian law, punishing the most vulnerable including children and older persons.
“NRC urges an immediate end to this cruel energy war and calls on all parties to protect civilians and critical infrastructure.”
Notes to editors:
- Between September and December, NRC provided winter support to over 13,500 conflict-affected people in Ukraine. This includes cash for fuel to buy firewood or other solid fuel; cash for utilities to cover electricity and heating costs; shelter support with light and medium repairs to damaged homes; and emergency cash assistance (RMPCA), delivered with partners for those affected by major attacks and sudden displacement.
