NRC is showcasing the art works of Afghan refugee and internally displaced children at an inspiring exhibition hosted by the European Commission in Geneva. The exhibitition is held in conjunction with UNHCR’s governing Executive Committee of the High Commissioner’s Programme (ExComm) and the High-level Segment on the Afghan Refugee situation.
Running from the 5th to 9th October 'Colours in Displacement' celebrates and showcases beautiful art pieces produced by over 400 Afghan displaced youth across Iran and Afghanistan. The exhibition also displays a series of photographs that capture the process of producing these art-works in a series of workshops across Afghanistan and Iran as part of an innovative education project implemented by NRC with CREART, a Spanish NGO specialising in art for peace education.
These workshops focus on providing psychosocial support and art education to displaced youth children between first and third grades in Iran and Afghanistan and also serve to build confidence and self-esteem with children participants - many of whom have encountered trauma during their displacement experience. Importantly, the art training workshops provide enjoyment and fun, filling free time and enabling all children involved to produce their own art products – often for the first time.
‘Colours in Displacement’ provides a positive insight into the lives of Afghan refugee youth and their displacement experience and is intended to highlight of the world’s largest and longest displacement situations and the specific support required for displaced Afghan children and youth. Almost one million Afghans are now internally displaced and Iran and Pakistan continue to host more than two million Afghan refugees, half of whom are children.
