NRC in Paris

NRC will advocate towards negotiators at COP21 to ensure that displacement and human mobility is included in the agreement. NRC will also play a role by organizing or presenting at 11 different events in Paris, over the next two weeks.

Secretary General, Jan Egeland, will be on the panel for the UN High Level Roundtable: “Human Mobility and Climate”. NRC is also part of the Advisory Group on Climate Change and Human Mobility. The Advisory Group is composed of: the United Nations’ High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Organization for Migration, UN University, the United Nations Development Programme, among others, including NGOs and academics.

According to Nina M. Birkeland, it is essential for NRC to work with partners in order to succeed in this process and have the necessary impact of our advocacy.

“Human mobility and climate change are both highly sensitive political issues. The fact that states now approach us for our advise on how to include and cover this in the Paris agreements, shows that our advocacy is successful. We are not stopping in Paris; we need to continue, because the displacement challenges related to climate change ahead of us are enormous. We must do everything we can to contribute to prevention of this projected displacement, and also secure the rights and needs of the millions already displaced in the context of climate change," she says.
