Gula Jan (51) has three children and a wife to support. He had been working on daily wages to earn his living. He had a small house which was destroyed about 18 months ago in the Tirah Valley in Khyber Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA) in Pakistan. Due to insecurity in the area, Gula Jan’s children were injured by shrapnel. This forced him to flee the area with his family and he took shelter in Jhagra, near Peshawar.
“I was left helpless after displacement. My biggest assets was a house which I lost and now live in uncertainty and a life of sadness, deprivation and little to look forward to,” he said.
Gula Jan had gone through tough circumstances and trauma while fleeing from insecure environment. He had lost all his belongings. His children and himself had little to eat and starved for weeks after the displacement. Due to financial pressure he could barely live in a rented house. He even had to borrow charpais (temporary beds) from his natives. According to Gula Jan, “My kids suffered greatly from mental and physical torture & trauma during all this period”.
When NRC found about difficult financial conditions of Gula Jan they provided him with a relief package for his assistance. The package from NRC includes a plastic jerry can, bucket, plastic mug, three metal cooking pots, six dinner plates, six metal mugs, two bed sheets, a cotton sanitary cloth, wooden cooking spoon, two plastic mats for sleeping, ten disinfecting soaps, a latrine jug and a water cooler. All of these household items are provided absolutely free by NRC to people in need.
Gula mentioned that by receiving these he would now be able to spend a little more on education of his children as he does not need to buy the household items anymore. While expressing his gratitude Gula Jan said “My heartiest prayers are with NRC for helping us!”.
