Starting out as a small department for crisis deployments, Giæver has led NORCAP through more than two decades of responding to humanitarian crises, global pandemics and natural disasters, while also building strong partnerships with UN agencies, regional actors such as the AU and the OSCE, and an increased focus on the important role of national authorities and local NGOs.
In recent years, NORCAP has focused specifically on strengthening partners’ response, bringing partners together to ensure sustainable and innovative improvements throughout the humanitarian, development and peacebuilding sectors.
“It has been an absolute privilege to lead NORCAP through all these years. I’ve always been concerned with how we can develop resilient solutions to ensure people facing crises are protected and empowered to build and sustain their livelihoods. I am proud of everything we have achieved, and now, it is time for others to head the next, important chapter for NORCAP”, Benedicte Giæver says.
“I would like to sincerely thank Benedicte Giæver for all her achievements in leading and developing NORCAP. Under her charge, NORCAP has become synonymous with high quality and flexible expertise and strategic partnerships to deliver better response, strengthen partners and institutions and drive system-wide improvements through the aid sector”, says Jan Egeland, Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council.
Giæver is not leaving the organisation but will take some time off and return later as a special adviser in NRC.
Former Regional Director for NRC in Latin America, Stine Paus, will serve as acting NORCAP Director until a permanent replacement has been recruited.
