The HLP Rights of Conflict Affected Women in Northeast Nigeria

Published 17. Sep 2019|Updated 02. Sep 2021
This research finds that women face many obstacles to enjoying equal housing, land and property (HLP) rights during conflict and in displacement in Northeast Nigeria.

Even before the conflict, local institutions created the conditions for women and men to perceive women to be of a lesser value. When asked about enjoying rights in displacement, women and men both often acknowledged that women and men were unequal and this was because of existing customary and religious institutions and social norms that participants perceive as linked to those institutions. Some participants though that change would be welcome, but not all agreed.
