Customary Law & Land Rights in South Sudan

This paper by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) combines a literature review of customary traditions of land tenure with a three-week field study of three states in South Sudan.

The purpose of the study is to document current practices in customary land allocation and dispute resolution in order to support returnees and other vulnerable populations, especially women, to access land and gain greater control.

The conclusion of the paper offers recommendations to improve NRC programming in the area to address growing areas of inequality
