Yemen: Collapse in peace talks claims innocent lives

Published 15. Aug 2016
Today’s targeting of an MSF facility in Hajjah brings up the number of civilian casualties since Yemen peace talks collapsed on 6 August to over 60. These included Saudi-led coalition airstrikes on a school in Saada, killing at least seven children and injuring 21, the destruction of a bridge on a main road linking the capital Sana’a with Hodeida, and the targeting of a potato chip factory in Sana’a killing 14 workers, mostly women.
Since the peace talks fell apart, there have been around 400 raids against at least 300 targets, including 16 air strikes on residential areas, 10 on factories and businesses, five on educational facilities and two on medical facilities, including today´s air strike.

Ground fighting has also been on the increase since talks collapsed, and the last week saw violent clashes in Salah district inside the besieged city of Taiz, where around 800,000 people are under siege.

“The attacks in the last nine days have been relentless, and what we feared most has been tragically confirmed: that whenever peace talks collapse, innocent children, men and women get killed,” said NRC Country Director in Yemen, Syma Jamil. “We cannot wait another month for peace talks to resume while innocent civilians are killed across the country. All parties to this conflict have to stop indiscriminate attacks on civilians and respect International Humanitarian Law. They are the only ones responsible to put an end to this madness.”

Almost three million people have fled their homes since the escalation of the conflict in March 2015, and over two million remain displaced within the country. Eight out of every 10 Yemeni civilian requires some kind of humanitarian assistance or protection.
