From mid 2009 to mid 2010 NRC constructed and rehabilitated 30 schools in Manatuto and Ermera, Timor-Leste. Alongside the construction program, a Compact Teacher Training Program was developed and implemented.
The evaluation found that NRC's actions recognised and were able to address the constraints and limitations that often leave remote and rural schools neglected in a country's development. Specifically, the school construction component took into account the need to provide durable structures that were appropriate and feasible to the environment.
The Compact Teacher Training recognised the value and importance of providing site-based support over an extended period of time to teachers who otherwise lack training opportunities, and in a cost-effective manner. The teachers motivation improved as well as the students enjoyment of school and of learning."
