The UN Secretary General has appointed Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, Elisabeth Rasmusson, to the position of Assistant Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP).
Rasmusson has lead NRC for more than five years and will take up her new position in WFP in April 2013. Head of the International Programme Department Toril Brekke will assume the post as Acting Secretary General until Rasmusson’s successor has been recruited.
- This is a good day for the humanitarian community and a sad day for the NRC. With Rasmusson WFP will get an energetic and visionary Assistant Executive Director with outstanding leadership skills and deep knowledge of humanitarian issues. It is a loss for NRC that Rasmusson is leaving, but I still choose to rejoice that the international humanitarian environment will continue to draw upon her experience, says Chairman of the NRC board, Idar Kreutzer.

Elisabeth Rasmusson was appointed Secretary General of Norwegian Refugee Council in 2008 and has led the organization to become Norway’s largest humanitarian organization, with programs in 22 countries. She has more than 20 years of humanitarian experience, and has worked as UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Uganda, Deputy Head of the OSCE-mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina and ICRC delegate in Colombia. She was also instrumental in establishing and leading NRC’s Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) in Geneva.
- I am honoured to have been given this opportunity. The World Food Program is the world’s largest humanitarian actor fighting hunger worldwide. But I leave the NRC with a sad heart. The organization's 3500 employees do a fantastic job assisting and protecting the worlds displaced. In DR Congo, Somalia and Afghanistan, NRC is present and provides humanitarian aid for displaced populations. For me it has been an honour to lead this impressive organization, says outgoing Secretary General Elisabeth Rasmusson.
NRC’s Director of the International Programme Department (IPD), Toril Brekke, will assume the position as Acting Secretary General of NRC 1. March 2013. Brekke has been Director of IPD for several years and has extensive international humanitarian experience.
- I am very pleased that such an experienced and accomplished leader as Toril Brekke has accepted the post as Acting Secretary General. The board will immediately start the process of recruiting a new Secretary General, and hope to finalize the process this spring. This is one of the most important executive jobs in Norway and we will use the necessary time to find a qualified replacement for Rasmusson, says Kreutzer.
