Norwegian Refugee Council has opened a new legal aid center in the city of Kharkiv in Eastern Ukraine. The center will provide free legal advice to internally displaced persons and others affected by the conflict.

“At the center in Kharkiv, legal advice will be provided by qualified lawyers through mobile counselling, home visits to the elderly or disabled, and through group sessions and information counselling via hotline phone numbers”,  Christopher Mehley , NRC's Country Director in Ukraine, says.

Kharkiv oblast has become the third biggest hosting area for internally displaced people since the hostilities in the East of Ukraine broke out. The newly opened NRC center will assist the internally displaced through free legal counselling and information on civil documentation, the registration process for the displaced and questions related to housing, land and property issues, not only in Kharkiv city but across the whole Kharkiv oblast.

“The legal aid center in Kharkiv is the second legal center NRC has opened in Ukraine this year. The first one was opened in Severodonetsk in June. The center in Kharkiv is funded through a grant from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs”, Christopher Mehley says.

The Legal Aid Centre in Kharkiv is part of NRC’s program of Information, Counselling and Legal Assistance (ICLA). This program aims to assist displaced and conflict-affected individuals to exercise their rights and overcome legal obstacles through the use of information, awareness-raising and legal counselling.

The NRC Legal Aid Centre is open Monday-Friday, from 8:00 to 17:00, at the following address:
36 Poltavskyi Shliakh, Kharkiv city.
